Radius Brick Staircase with Retaining Walls & Railings
Updated March 14, 2026

This project is a curved (radius) brick staircase that connects a lower patio to the upper driveway and garage. The staircase is built in traditional brick with a smooth radius, and the same brick is used for flanking retaining walls that follow the curve of the steps, so the stairs and walls read as one continuous hardscape.
Custom black metal handrails run on both sides of the staircase for safety and clear definition of the path. The handrails are supported by substantial brick pillars; each pillar is capped with a lamp fixture to light the steps and entry at night. At the bottom of the stairs, a brick paver path continues from the steps into the garden. Low, trimmed shrubs line the lower brick wall, and planting beds with mulch and mixed perennials sit beside the path. A stone retaining wall in the background separates the garden from the slope behind. The layout keeps the focus on the radius staircase and brick work while tying the hardscape into the existing landscape. The scope included the curved stair and walls, handrails and lamp pillars, and the connecting paver path, using traditional masonry and materials for a durable, low-maintenance entrance.
